HISTORY: This elegant engraved piece is an exact (non-firing) reproduction of the Navy revolvers carried by James Bulter "Wild Bill" Hickok. Hickok became well known as an Army scout during the Civil War. In fact, his pair of these beautiful revolvers was a gift from a Massachusetts Senator in recognition of his service as a scout for the Union Army during the War Between the States.
Hickock was a staunch abolitionist. His father's farm in Illinois had been a stop on the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves, and he often defended it against slave hunters. He was said to have been an excellent shot, even as a boy. Following the war, he gained fame as a scout, Indian fighter, and lawman. Unlike most such legends, he was widely known as a fast and deadly gunman, even during his own lifetime.
