HISTORY: This engraved .36 caliber, 1851 Navy Revolver is an exact (non-firing) reproduction of the Navy revolver carried by James Bulter "Wild Bill" Hickok. Hickok became well known as an Army scout during the Civil War. In fact, his pair of these beautiful revolvers was a gift from a Massachusetts Senator in recognition of his service as a scout for the Union Army during the War Between the States. Hickock was a staunch abolitionist. His father's farm in Illinois had been a stop on the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves, and he often defended it against slave hunters. He was said to have been an excellent shot, even as a boy. Following the war, he became known as a scout, Indian fighter, lawman who was a fast and deadly gunman. In his days as a lawman, a cry of "Wild Bill is on the street" was usually enough to sober the rowdy, drunken cowboys who caroused in the Kansas cowtowns where Hickcock enforced the law.
