HISTORY: In use from 1717 to 1816, The Charleville musket saw service in the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, the French and Indian War, American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
The musket used in the American Revolution was based on the 1763 model--a stronger weapon than the 1717 original, but one that proved too heavy to be practical and saw further refinements in 1766. The .69 caliber Charleville was still smaller and lighter than the .75 caliber British 'Brown Bess' musket.
Its rate of fire depended on the skill of the rifleman, but was typically 2-3 shots per minute. However, like all smooth-bore muskets, its long-range accuracy was nothing to brag about, and victory or defeat was often determined by hand-to-hand bayonet fighting.
Thanks to the influence of America's foremost French ally, Lafayette, large numbers of Charleville muskets were imported into the United States during the American Revolution. The design of the American Springfield musket in 1795 was heavily influenced by the Charleville.
This fine replica of the historic Charleville Musket is authentic down to the St. Etienne stamp on the lockplate! 55" long without the bayonet, it measures an impressive 72" long with the bayonet in place (note that the bayonet does not lock in place). The musket is light for its size, weighing in at only 6 pounds. This is a fine piece for a collection of historic muskets, or as part of a Revolutionary War reenactor's armaments. It makes a great companion piece to the British 'Brown Bess' musket, which also saw service in the American Revolution, on both sides of the battle lines.
