A machine pistol is a handgun-style weapon, usually magazine fed and self-loading, capable of full automatic or burst fire, but chambered for pistol cartridges. The MAC-11 (an acronym for Military Armament Corporation Model 11) was developed during the 1970s by American designer, Gordon Ingram as a sub-compact version of the Mac-10. It is sometimes confused with the M11/9 or Vulcan M11-9, both of which are chambered for 9mm Luger Parabellums, while the Mac-11 fires the smaller .380 ACP round,
Mac-10s or Mac-11s are used by tactical police units like SWAT or hostage resuce teams operating inside buildings and other close quarters. Unfortunately, they're also frequently the weapon of choice for drug cartels. Some countries issue machine pistols to infantry, paratroopers, artillery, helicopter, tank crews, and especially Special Forces units like the U.S. SEALs, for Close Quarter Combat situations such as inside buildings or tunnels, where a small weapon is needed.
